DIY Sewing: Convertible dress from skirt

I can't believe I haven't posted about this yet! Yesterday I was thinking about what to post today and saw that I still had these pics on my computer. lol.

Above is basically how I did it in a quick little diagram.
Please excuse the rough illustration..

I started with this long, straight skirt that I was going to send off to the thrift store until I realized it was missing buttons..

Well, if I have to do some work on it anyways, why not turn it into something I will use?

and besides, it's such a pretty fabric..
So I cut a strip off the bottom (approx.4 inches?)
and hemmed the raw edge of the new bottom of the skirt.

Already the skirt had a lot more swing and movement to it- I almost just quit there!

Then, I cut the 4inch wide strip in half but at an angle so they would be longer. At this point, I hemmed all raw edges I had cut.

I only had to cut the strip once because my skirt had buttons down the front so I just had to open it up on the other end to get 2 strips of the same length.

If you're using a skirt without a button down front, you would need to cut twice- once angled like this and the other a cut straight up and down.

Next step is to sew each strip onto the waist band of the skirt.

Take the straight edge of one strip and pin it in place on the front of the waist band.
Repeat with the other strip then try it on to make sure you get the coverage you want before sewing it in place.

Now it's time to sew the top on! I stitched mine in place behind the waistband.

This is my favorite way to wear it.

I bring the strips up the front and cross them in the back then bring the ends around to the front and tie them in the middle!

Side view!

but it can also be worn as a halter or just as a skirt with the strips wrapped around the waist, or whichever way you can make it work!

Little Gaston is not much help to mommy with the sewing. If anything he's a pest and you just don't get between me and my sewing machine!

So he was put out and the door shut behind him but not to be deterred..
Reminds me of Jack Nicholson in the Jacob's Ladder posters!LOL

So? Whatcha doin'?

My Take on The Shamrock Shake

I was reading fellow blogger, Dana Clover's post (over at www.cravingcomfort.blogspot.com) about shamrock shakes the other day where she tells of the trials and tribulations of getting her hands on a shamrock shake in Texas (no can do, apparently). No shamrock shakes in TX?!?! I feel her pain though. I've lived in NY & VA(where they allegedly DO have shamrock shakes, yeah, OK) and have yet to taste one. But not for lack of trying, mind you. Oh no! Every March I confidently walk up to the counter, money in hand and proudly order my shamrock shake only to be informed that they have run out. RUN OUT!?! EVERY TIME I HAPPEN TO BE NEARBY?!? REALLY?!?! <shakes head> I have given up, MCDonald's, given up. I will have to adopt Miss Dana's approach and make my own I Don't Need No Stinkin McDonald's Shamrock Shake!
I started with Miss Dana's recipe but then I thought, hey, wouldn't this be way better (and infinitely more Irish, like) with a shot of Bailey's (or generic brand)Irish Cream?!

The answer was a definite YES.

Here's how I did it so you too can experience the magic:
2cp vanilla ice cream
1 cp milk
1/2tsp mint extract
1shot (or more ;)) irish cream
2 drops green food coloring

Put in Blender and mix until combined. Pour into glass. Optional: add chocolate syrup (but why not?)

Cheers!

Sewing project- Adding a bra top to my dress

This is what I was up to last night: I wanted to add some support/ coverage to the top of this dress but rogue bra straps are not a good accessory

It just worked out that I had an old bra (with padding, yay!) that had worn out straps.

Instead of throwing it away, I cut all the straps and band pieces off. The cups and the little piece that connected them to each other was left.

Then I pinned it in place on the dress. Try it on to make sure it's where it should be (without stabbing self with pins).

All that was left was to sew it in place.

The dress has a lining behind the chest area so I stitched carefully not going through both layers. This kept the stitching from showing on the front :)

Looking good!

and feeling crafty!

Happy birthday to me!

So as you all probably already knew, it was my birthday last Thursday.

Mike made me this beautiful cake and frosted it in my favorite color even though it put him at risk of losing his man card..It must be love.

It was pretty yummy once I got over being so amazed at his frosting abilities. I can't even frost a cake this well!!

In fact, I had leftover cake for lunch yesterday..SHHH! don't tell my hips. Maybe they won't notice..

He gave me a sweet little card too, which inspired me to get making cards like this one.

Card making is so much fun!
Maybe I will put this one in my etsy store too :)

A Love-ly Breakfast

This is a romantic twist on an old stand by. You remember the classic egg inside the bread thing, right?

Well, this time the hole is heart shaped <3

In case you've never done this before, all you do is:
cut out a hole in the middle of a slice of bread,
melt butter in a frying pan,
place bread in pan,
crack egg into hole
and fry it up!

I even fry the holes! MMMM, fried bread is so yummy!

You can also sprinkle salt and pepper over the egg so it gets cooked in.

A sweet breakfast for your Honey(s).

BIG news..I'm on etsy!!

Hey guess what?!

There's big crafty news in my world that I wanted to share with you...I just listed my first item for sale on etsy!!!!

Everyone's been telling me for years that I should try etsy.com to sell my handmade goodies.

So last year, I set up a store but I never ended up putting anything in it, haha.

One step at a time..
So here's the link if you want to check it out, up my views, and maybe even favorite my store (I need some love):

There's just the one item for now but if it does well and I get a good response, I will definitely put more goodies up.

The Pancake Experiment: Blueberry Pie Pancakes!!

The Pancake Experiment continues with blueberry pie pancakes!
(This post could also be called "Ice cream for Breakfast")

Step 1: Wash off them berries!!
I don't want you getting sick from making something I posted- that would make me feel really bad..

Step 2: gather all these ingredients and combine them in a large bowl :
1cp blueberries
1cp flour
4TBS rolled oats(the old fashioned kind)
1tsp ground cinnamon
1tsp baking powder
1Tbs sugar
2/3cp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1Tbs oil

Step3: Spray pan with no stick spray and allow pan to heat up before pouring batter onto it.

When you see bubbles form in the batter, it's time to flip them over.

oh MY god, they look so good!

They actually exploded in blueberry-ness when I cut into them with my fork!

Ice Cream goes best with blueberry pie so..

Mike said these just might be his favorite of all the pancakes I've made him so far!

Here he is helping me with dinner.
So sweet. While I was making breakfast, he quietly got out the veggies we needed chopped up for dinner and cut them all up. I hardly had anything left to do when he got done!

I later successfully made biscuits, which is exciting because I (used to rolling out cookies and pie crusts) always roll them out too thin ...and then they don't rise and get poofy ...and we end up with cracker-like biscuits.

But this time I restrained myself AND LOOK!!

Beautiful, poofy biscuits!

The biscuits were so good & we were on a blueberry and ice cream kick so we made blueberry cobbler sundaes complete with cinnamon on top.

Lindy Hop Steps Made Easy: Wiggles Routine (solo jazz dance moves)

Okay folks, I've had a rough week so there hasn't been much(or any) activity on here this week and I apologize.

Last night I went dancing to help me feel better (works everytime!) and met a great bunch of newbie dancers and a couple of more experienced ones too who showed me some new stuff (like Balboa moves and some more Charleston).

So today I've been scouring youtube for fun stuff and came across this lady's educational videos. She's got a bunch of how to videos for solo jazz moves that are super fun!

And by the way, I've danced to Glenn Crytzer and the Syncopators live many times!!! That's music in the background :)

Above is a routine she put together with instructions on how to do it! So get in front of a mirror and try it out now! You'll thank me later ;)
