DIY Shrug upcycle from a turtle neck

Here's a real easy fashion upcycle with little to no sewing.

Let's turn this old turtle neck shirt (with an ugly stain- but you can't see it in the pic) into a lovely shrug.

Start by cutting off the bottom of the shirt.
I just eyeballed it but you could determine how long you want it and measure and all that..
It looks like I cut about 5 or 6 inches down from the armpit.

Grab your handy seam ripper and take out all the stitches holding the collar to the shirt.
I love taking out stitches as long as they aren't ones that I put in!

Next, cut a curve down each side like shown in the picture. You can draw it out on the fabric with pencil, if that makes it easier.
I decided to hem the neckline so I folded it down 1/4 inch and sewed straight across.
The rest has not been hemmed as yet and I wore it over the weekend. It feels like t-shirt material so it hasn't frayed around the edges.
Practically No-Sew!

Tada!
I'm thinking I might add ruffles to the rounded edges. What do you think?

  2. What a great idea - I can't tell you how many turtlenecks I have consignaed to the rag bag because of a stain.....now I will turn them into shrugs! Which, I must admit, I thought were silly when they first came into style, but then I bought one out of desperation because I needed something to go with a sleeveless scoop neck dress and couldn't find a cardigan that I liked. I am now a convert to the power of the shrug. Ha. Have a great weekend.

    1. Lynne, I had the same thought but they are so useful! and kind of vintage-y style too! I've seen this done wiht t-shirts but I did it this way because the sleeves keep my arms warm :)
